IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY

The 1959 eight-man football team was not listed the Springfield High 1959 yearbook. These football team members were discussed in a September 24,1959 Springfield Monitor newspaper article and October 1, 1959 newspaper article.
Springfield High’s football eight-man football team made its debut on September 25, 1959 at Stella, NE. Kick off was scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Coach Ernest Bouska announced the likely line-up for the team would be: Quarterback: Dick Latham, Center: Gary Iske, Ends: Allen Stevens and Dave Hike, Fullback: Scott Luttman, Halfback: Herman Hibbeler, Tackles: Jim Johnson and George Behney. Although the first game for the football team was a loss at 28-0, the team held the opposing team’s first score until just before the end of the first half. Coach Bouska cited the team’s inexperience as the big thing. He also singled out players: Scott Luttman, Larry Petersen, and Allen Stevens as looking good for the Springfield High Trojans.
