NEBRASKA 9/11 MEMORIAL STAIR CLIMB

In remembrance of the 20th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, members of the public will join area firefighters to climb the stairs of the Werner Park Stadium in honor of the 343 firefighters from the FDNY who died while trying to save others.

Join the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) on September 11, 2021, for the Nebraska 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at the Werner Park Stadium, 12356 Ballpark Way, Papillion, NE.  Each participant pays tribute to a FDNY firefighter by climbing or walking the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Registration is $30. Everyone will receive a photo ID of one of the fallen heroes of September 11th. Onsite registration will begin at 7:30 am with Opening Ceremonies beginning at 8:15 am.  The Climb will start at 8:30 am and will end at 12:00 pm. Visit https://nfff.akaraisin.com/ui/Nebraska to register and for more information.

“The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is an opportunity for anyone in the community to demonstrate respect and admiration for these courageous men who gave their lives trying to save others. It’s also a way to show their loved ones that we will never forget them,” said National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Executive Director Ron Siarnicki.

The Stair Climbs fund the programs provided by the NFFF to support the families of your local fallen firefighters and the FDNY Counseling Services Unit. For more information about the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climbs and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, go to www.firehero.org.

It Happened in Springfield History

History Highview

Work began in September 1972 on 2nd Street in the new Highview addition. Herb Self is operating the scraper up on the top ridge. Don Moore is pulling the sheepsfoot roller.

The Highview Addition to Springfield was approved at the Village Board meeting on September 5, 1972. Grading began almost immediately by the Viking Construction Company, developer of the area. Original plans called for 126 single-family homes, 15 lots for duplexes, seven acres for apartments, seven acres fronting on Highway 50 for commercial buildings and extending 2nd Street to Platteview Rd.  Eric Dahlberg president of the construction company hoped to start building before winter began. The Highview Addition did not fully develop as originally proposed but did provide many new homes for the Springfield area.
