Hey Springfield, welcome to the last week of October! There’s lots going on around town — fall fun, school events, and plenty of community spirit to wrap up the month.
Halloween is coming Friday!
That means it’s time for one of the highlights of the school year — the Annual Main Street Costume Parade and Fall Room Parties!
- Date: Friday, October 31
- Parade Start: Around 1:35 PM — students will depart school and parade through Main Street.
- Room Parties: After the parade, students will return to their classrooms for fall fun and treats!
Westmont Elementary:
- Classroom fall parties will begin at 2:00 PM.
- Students will change into costumes at 1:30 PM.
- The parade begins at 1:45 PM (weather permitting) outside along the sidewalk, starting out back.
- Parents and guardians are welcome to come watch the parade and join in the fun!
Costume Guidelines:
- Costumes are optional, but encouraged!
- Please avoid anything bloody, gory, or with weapons.
- Keep it simple so students can change independently.
SAVE THE DATE:
Springfield Platteview Community Schools will host a Community Information Meeting about the proposed school bond on Monday, Nov. 3 at 7 PM at Platteview High School.

Westmont Elementary
Fall Classroom Parties
Westmont will have classroom fall parties on Friday, Oct. 31 at 2 p.m. Students will change into their costumes, (please no blood, gore, or weapons) at 1:30 p.m. and the parade will begin at 1:45 p.m. Weather permitting, the parade will take place outside along the sidewalk, beginning out back. Parents/Guardians are welcome to come and watch the parade. Room parents are welcome to go to the classroom at 1:45 p.m. to set up for the parties.
The PTO wants to send out a BIG Thank you for the support for the Fall Harvest Festival.
Coats for Kids
Every year the Knights of Columbus at St. Joseph's Church in Springfield very generously donates coats for children who need them. The cold weather is right around the corner, and we do go to recess outside every day, weather permitting. It gets cold, and every student needs and
deserves a warm coat, hat and gloves. Please plan ahead and check your closets to see what needs you have. Contact me to make arrangements for coats. I will need to know each child's age and size. We keep all requests confidential and discreetly get the coats to you. Please do not

Main Street Costume Parade/ Fall Room Party
One of the highlights of the school year is coming up—our annual Fall Costume Parade and Room Parties! This
fun event will take place on Friday, October 31.
● The parade will begin with students departing school at approximately 1:35.
● After the parade, students will return to their classrooms for a brief room party, concluding around 3:10 PM.
Costumes
● Students are welcome—but not required—to wear costumes for the parade and party.
● Simple costumes that children can change into independently are best.
● Please avoid costumes that are bloody, violent, or inappropriate for school.
● Time will be given during the day for students to change into their costumes.
If you prefer that your child not participate in the parade or party, please notify the school—those requests will be
honored.

ESU#3 Driver Ed is in Full Swing and students are now drivig. ESU#3 will offer classes January 17th.

This event is a fundraiser for the Unified Football Program There will be a bake sale as well as a place for at-will donations. This game will take place at Salberg Field. 
Students are allowed to wear costumes to school on October 31st as long as they donate $3 and follow all of the rules laid out above.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly changing many aspects of education. At PHS, we believe it is essential to teach our students how to use AI responsibly. AI can be a powerful tool to support learning, but it can also be misused in ways that violate academic integrity.
To help guide our students, the attached graphic will be posted in every classroom. It outlines examples of safe, cautious, and prohibited uses of AI. Our goal is to help students see AI as a tool for brainstorming, organizing, and improving their work—while also understanding that their final work must reflect their own knowledge, thoughts and effort.
As we continue this work, I will share updates and resources with you so we can partner together in helping our students learn to use AI wisely while providing parents with tools that could make school work at home more productive.

It Happened in Springfield
In 1978, Springfield Elementary shifted its annual Halloween Parade from Main Street to the school's gymnasium because of rainy weather. Students from kindergarten to sixth grade, representing both Springfield and Westmont schools, paraded through Springfield Elementary before making their way to the gymnasium. There, they were welcomed by an enthusiastic crowd of parents, relatives, and friends. Treats were distributed by school staff, as well as representatives from the Springfield Boosters and Springfield State Bank.

How Halloween Became an American Tradition
Halloween began over 2,000 years ago with the Celtic festival Samhain (pronounced SOW-in), marking the end of harvest and the night spirits were believed to roam. Irish and Scottish immigrants brought those traditions to America in the 1800s — swapping turnips for pumpkins, adding costumes, and sharing ghost stories.
By the early 1900s, it had become a community celebration with parades, parties, and plenty of treats. Today, Halloween is all about fun, friends, and a little fright — an old-world custom turned into a favorite American tradition!
So when you see those glowing jack-o’-lanterns, remember — it all started with the Irish!
