Welcome back
Hey Springfield, happy October 22nd! They call this time of the month “the magic of October” — and it truly feels that way. The evenings are cool, the stars are bright, and there’s a calm in the air before the rush of the holidays.
If you’re looking for something unique to do this week, look up — literally! The fall sky is putting on quite a show. It’s a great time to check out the library telescope rental program and spend an evening stargazing. Whether you’re spotting constellations with the kids or just taking a quiet moment for yourself, there’s something peaceful about seeing how wide and beautiful the night sky really is.
Save the Date!
Be sure to mark your calendar for the Library Used Book Sale on November 8th. It’s a free-will donation event — a great chance to stock up on books, support the library, and give old favorites a new home.
Have a great week everyone. Stay warm, stay kind, and maybe take a minute to look up tonight — the stars have a way of reminding us how blessed we really are.

It Happened in Springfield
1981 Halloween Craft Fair
In 1981, the Home Extension Club of Sarpy County organized a Halloween Craft Fair onOctober 14 and 15. During the event, local children showcased various costume ideas. Bob and Carolyn Wiese's children, who are residents of the Springfield area, participated by wearing their Halloween costumes. Tiffany proudly displayed her “Dice” outfit, while Jon chose to dress as the Lone Ranger.

Fit Tip of the Week - Get rooted in the season. Eat fresh.
Potassium: A Game-Changer for Heart Health
A simple change in what’s on your plate can make a big difference for your heart. Potassium helps balance fluids, supports nerve function, and — most importantly — helps your body manage blood pressure by counteracting the effects of sodium. When your diet is low in potassium and high in salt, your heart has to work harder.
Here are a few heart-smart foods rich in potassium:
- Avocados – Loaded with healthy fats and potassium, they help support healthy blood pressure and heart rhythm.
- Bananas – The classic potassium food! Great for post-workout recovery and muscle function.
- Sweet potatoes – Full of fiber and potassium; they also help stabilize blood sugar.
- Spinach and leafy greens – High in potassium, iron, and magnesium — a triple win for circulation and heart strength.
- Oranges and citrus fruits – Provide potassium and vitamin C, which support blood vessel health.
- Salmon – Not only offers potassium, but also omega-3 fatty acids, which help lower inflammation and triglycerides.
You can’t outwork a bad diet — but you can nourish your way to better heart health.

This is the way country music started out, with acoustic instruments, before electricity. People sat out on the lawn, on the porch, or in a friend’s house and played their instruments together.

“It can be no dishonor to learn from others when they speak good sense.” —Sophocles
Sophocles was one of the three great ancient Greek tragedians, best known for plays like Oedipus Rex and Antigone. He lived around 496–406 BC — long before modern philosophy or psychology, yet his writings still dig deep into human behavior, pride, and moral choices.
