Welcome Back, Springfield!

Happy October 1st, 2025! October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, and it’s a great reminder to stay safe online. Cybersecurity isn’t just for large corporations; it’s something we all need to take seriously. From shopping and banking to social media and email, so much of our daily life happens online, and protecting your digital footprint is essential.

Cyber Security Week
Here are a few quick tips to keep in mind:

  • Use strong passwords – Mix letters, numbers, and symbols to make them harder to crack.
  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) – Add an extra layer of security with text codes or app notifications.
  • Watch out for phishing scams – Avoid clicking suspicious links or sharing personal info through email.
  • Keep software updated – Install the latest updates on your computer, phone, and apps.

For more expert tips, visit 22HaloMedia’s Cyber Security page. They’ve got excellent guidance to help you stay protected.

Fall is Here
While many look forward to the cooler air, changing leaves, and cozy fire pit nights, I’ll admit I’m a die-hard summer fan. Still, there’s no denying that fall brings its own beauty and fun traditions.

What’s Happening at the Library

Did you know you can support the library in some fun ways this fall? Stop by and pick up fall bulbs, movie tickets, or Village Inn pie gift cards—each purchase helps support the library in a big way.

While you’re there, don’t forget to check out a new book or even a DVD. The library has a great selection of movies ready to borrow for your next cozy night.

And if you’re looking for something out of this world, you can even check out the library’s telescope. Nebraska’s night skies have been showing off lately—clear evenings are perfect for spotting planets, constellations,

Reminder - there has been congestion in the loop at drop-off and pick-up due to cars parking. Please remember: the loop is for moving traffic only, not parking.

Pull forward to the farthest open spot, drop off/pick up on the curb side, then carefully re-enter the left lane to exit.
Do not use the staff parking lot by the playground — it is not a safe location.
Grades 3–6: You may park along Richland Drive; students can use the crossing guard and sidewalk. Please do not have them walk through the staff lot.
Preschool: Parents must walk children to and from the door. Please park in designated spots or the far lane to help reduce congestion.

Little note from MRS. BECK- Westmont PTO president. We’re hosting our annual Fall Harvest Festival on Thursday, October 23rd, 6–8 p.m. — our only fundraiser of the year!

We’ll have a silent auction and need community support. If your business would like to donate an item, basket, or sponsor part of the event, please reach out (I’m happy to come pick it up if needed).

Your generosity helps us support the amazing students and staff at Westmont Elementary. Thank you!

Next Friday, Sept. 26, is our first Popcorn Friday!  Students will enjoy popcorn with friends while reading.

We ask for a $5 donation per student to help cover costs. If you haven’t sent it yet, please send it with your child next week, marked “Popcorn Fridays.”

2025 Springfield Farmers Market Ad

---------------

It Happened in Springfield

On July 6, 1882, the cornerstone for the first Methodist Episcopal Church was laid as part of its foundation. Until the new church building was completed on September 10, 1882, services for the forty members of the church were conducted at the schoolhouse. Pastor Clinton D. Day served the Methodist Church from April 1882 until September 1883. The following month, on August 20, 1882, the Congregational Church celebrated its first service in the new building, with Rev. Gilbert officiating. Prior to the construction of their church,
services took place in the upstairs of Otto Joern General Store. The Congregational Church had a membership of sixty individuals. The church was particularly noted for thebeautiful sound of its bell, which was rung for morning and evening worship services, as well as to mark the New Year—a tradition of the time. Stay tuned for next week’s history post, where we will continue the story of Springfield’s churches.

Insurance Tip– Good coverage matters!

Did you know you can add Cyber & Identity Protection to your Farmers policy?

Not every insurance company offers this coverage, but it can be a game-changer if your identity is stolen. The truth is, nearly 1 in 20 Americans fall victim to identity theft each year—and restoring your identity often means hiring professionals or even lawyers.

With this coverage, you’ll have added peace of mind knowing help is there if you ever need it

Fit Tip of the Week - use your feet!

Walking is one of the easiest ways to stay active—and one of the best ways to enjoy what the Good Lord gave us: NATURE and COMMUNITY. Take a stroll down Main Street, walk to the library, swing by the farmers market, or loop around the park. Every step strengthens your body, clears your mind, and connects you to the place we all call home—Springfield. So lace up, grab a friend, and get those steps in—you’ll feel better and support your community along the way!

COME ON OVER!

This is the way country music started out, with acoustic instruments, before electricity.  People sat out on the lawn, on the porch, or in a friend’s house and played their instruments together.

Enjoy the originality of music which is still present in many circles of friends.
