Welcome Back, Springfield!

Can you believe it’s already Labor Day weekend? Time sure does fly! While it may not be the last weekend of summer, it’s definitely another good reason to gather, relax, and celebrate.

But what are we really celebrating?

Labor Day goes back to the late 1800s, honoring the strength, hard work, and dedication of the American worker. It’s more than just an extra day off — it’s about recognizing the people who built, and continue to build, our communities and our nation.

So as we fire up the grills, head out on one last summer trip, or just enjoy some quiet time at home, let’s remember that this holiday was made possible because people came together for something bigger than themselves. Imagine if we found more ways to do that today — not just for a three-day weekend, but for making our lives and communities stronger all year long.

Here’s to celebrating work, rest, and everything in between this Labor Day weekend!

A Quick Look at Labor Day History

1882 – The very first Labor Day parade was held in New York City.

1894 – President Grover Cleveland signed the bill making Labor Day a national holiday.

Today – We celebrate with parades, barbecues, and one last taste of summer before fall routines start again. now looking ahead to the weekend weather.

Weekend Weather  -Expect a delightful mix of sun and mild temperatures as we head into the week — with highs mostly in the low 80s and a sunny Monday (Sep 1) warming up to 85 °F. Keep an umbrella handy toward the end of the week: Friday through Sunday and into Wednesday (Sep 3) bring chances for scattered showers and afternoon thunderstorms.”

Onto Springfield community news.

Summer is almost over, get this in by Sept 1st.

Pickleball Is Coming to Main Street!
Plans are still be Planned. I will keep looking for updates!

Little history on PB

Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by three dads—Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum—who were looking for a new game to entertain their families. Using a badminton court, a perforated plastic ball (like a Wiffle ball), and homemade paddles, they created a sport that blended elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong.

The game’s name has two origin stories: some say it came from Pritchard’s dog, Pickles, who loved chasing the ball; others claim it came from the term “pickle boat” in rowing, where leftover rowers are mixed together, much like how pickleball combined different sports.

Over the years, pickleball has grown from a backyard pastime to one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S. and worldwide, with leagues, tournaments, and courts popping up everywhere.

Average age nowaday is about 35, thanks to the surge of players in their 20s, 30s, and 40s.

  • That said, over 50% of “core” players (those who play regularly) are 55 and older.

Stay tuned—Main Street is about to get a lot more competitive (and a whole lot more fun)!

1988 TREE PLANTING CEREMONY

On May 2, 1988, members of the Sarpy County Home Extension Council Citizenship Committee planted a Purple Plum tree at the Sarpy County Fairgrounds to celebrate National Extension Homemakers Week. The officers of the Citizenship Committee included: Judy Kersten, Pat Schneier, Trena Hagan, Audrey Olsan, Ruth Adolf, and Janice Errett. The event was also
supported by: Bob Woolman, county commissioner; Dale Harder, Sarpy County Fair Board President; Ernest Olsan; Dale Harder; and Larry Kersten. All members of the Citizenship Committee felt the tree was a wonderful way to celebrate and enhance the beauty of the fairgrounds.

Insurance Tip– Service Line Coverage
Utility service lines are often not covered by a standard homeowners policy. Don’t get caught with a costly surprise like root damage, a dug-up driveway, and a big repair bill. Adding Service Line Coverage to your policy can help protect you from unexpected expenses when underground pipes or wires fail.

Fit Tip of the Week - Eat right. Workout hard. It’s a lifestyle, not a diet.

The biggest key to lasting results isn’t willpower or meal plans—it’s identity. If you keep telling yourself, “I’m not consistent” or “I always fall off,” you’ll keep living that story.

Shift the story. See yourself as the person who shows up, takes care of herself, and builds strength daily. When your identity changes, your habits stick—and fitness stops being something you chase and starts being who you are.

COME ON OVER!

This is the way country music started out, with acoustic instruments, before electricity.  People sat out on the lawn, on the porch, or in a friend’s house and played their instruments together.

Enjoy the originality of music which is still present in many circles of friends.
