Welcome Back!
Hey Springfield, we’re deep into July, and you’ve probably heard someone mention the Dog Days of Summer.
But what does that actually mean?
The phrase goes all the way back to ancient Rome. The Romans noticed that the hottest, muggiest days of the year lined up with the rising of the star Sirius—also known as the Dog Star. It’s part of the constellation Canis Major, which literally means “Greater Dog.”
Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky, and back then, it would rise just before the sun during late July. Romans believed this cosmic pairing—the sun plus Sirius—was what made summer scorch so hard.
We can spot Sirius in the night sky—just not during the Dog Days.
Right now, it rises and sets with the sun, which is why it’s hidden in daylight. But starting in late summer and into fall, Sirius reappears in the early morning hours, glowing like a spotlight.
And here’s a fun tip:
Want to find Sirius later this year? Borrow a telescope from the Springfield Library!
Springfield Library has a telescopes to lend out, just like books. It’s a great way to turn a hot summer night into a cool backyard science moment.
And yes—it is hot. But let’s not let these long days slip by without doing something meaningful. This is the perfect time to connect with someone new, explore the outdoors, or simply enjoy the beauty around us.
Some favorite local spots to check out:
- MoPac Trail
- Schramm Park
- Platte River State Park (a personal favorite)
- Splash Park
- Fresbi Golf
And let’s not forget how amazing our town truly is—especially our library. If you haven’t been in lately, stop by and see what’s going on this week. It’s a great spot to cool down, catch a story time, or join in on a craft or community event.

It Happen in Springfield
In 1945, Leo O. and Irene Timmerman acquired a feed yard in Omaha, situated near 84th & L, after several years of farming. In 1960, they sold their business to a developer to buy the Sass Brothers Feedyard, located 2.5 miles west of Highway 50 near Springfield. The Timmerman family which included four sons and two daughters, moved to Springfield. By 1971, Timmerman
transferred ownership of the business to his four sons as he planned to retire, though he remained involved. In the late 1970s, the Timmermans expanded their cattle feeding operation to include buffalo. The Timmerman Feedyard business eventually grew to encompass additional locations
across Nebraska, Colorado, and South Dakota. In 1989, the corporate offices moved into the former lumberyard building at 165 So. 2nd Street in Springfield. Currently, the business operates feedyards in Nebraska, Colorado, and Kansas. Three generations of the Timmermans family have successfully overseen their family business. The Feedyard located on Platteview Road in
Springfield has since ended operations, and the land has been sold to OPPD.

Fit Tip of the Week – no-nonsense
Want to gain muscle? Eat more protein. Lift heavier.
Trying to lose weight? Eat more protein. Lift—and run or move more.
Just maintaining? Find your happy spot. Stay consistent.
Bottom line: Protein + movement = progress.
No magic, just muscle and mindset.
--------------
Insurance Tip of the Week – Check Your Roof Coverage
Not All Policies Are Equal
Summer storms = roof damage season.
Make sure your homeowner’s policy covers replacement cost, not just actual cash value (ACV). ACV means depreciation gets deducted, and you could be stuck paying thousands out of pocket.

COME ON OVER!
This is the way country music started out, with acoustic instruments, before electricity. People sat out on the lawn, on the porch, or in a friend’s house and played their instruments together.
Enjoy the originality of music which is still present in many circles of friends.

“Summer afternoon—summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two most beautiful words in the English language.”
— Henry James
“Summer afternoon—summer afternoon...”
It’s a phrase that perfectly captures nostalgia, stillness, and the quiet joy of warm, golden hours.
