It Happen in Springfield
An Abridged Account of Springfield Founder, James D. Spearman’s Early Years
For those of you who familiar with the beginnings of Springfield, it is well known the Captain James
Dawson Spearman was the founder of the town of Springfield in 1881. What has not been widely
published is his early years. Captain Spearman led an eventful life before moving to Sarpy County. He
was born near Jacksonville, Illinois on March 9, 1833 to parents who were Kentucky pioneers. The family
eventually moved to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa just after the close of the Blackhawk War.
Captain Spearman began his education in the common schools of Mt. Pleasant. In 1851, at the age of 18,
he joined a group traveling to California, crossing the plains with an ox team. While in California, he
engaged in mining for two years.
On his return to the East via the Isthmus of Panama, the ship he was on was attacked by pirates.
Thankfully, he was among other stranded passengers who were rescued by a passing vessel. After
returning to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, he took up farming until he volunteered for the Union Army during the
Civil War.
In the fall of 1862, Spearman was commissioned to train a company of 105 volunteers and was
subsequently promoted to the rank of Captain. He served under Generals Sherman and Grant and in 1863
participated in the battle at Vicksburg, where he sustained a gunshot to his hip that led to partial paralysis.
He was discharged from the service in April 1864.
Upon returning to Mt. Pleasant, he resumed farming until 1869, when he ventured into the merchandising
business. In 1871, Spearman relocated to Nebraska, settling on a farm about 1½ miles south of what is
now Springfield. After seven years, he moved to the Sarpy Center area, where he attempted to plat a town
that never fully developed. In 1881, he successfully platted the town of Springfield, which thrived with
the construction of the Missouri Pacific Railroad.
During Springfield Days, local historian, Paul Mauldin, will share tales of the “Ghost Towns” of Sarpy
County. Come learn about towns, such as Sarpy Center, and other towns that are no longer in existence.
The program will be at Springfield Memorial Library on Saturday June 7 at 1:00 p.m.
