Welcome Back!

Hey Springfield, Hope you had a meaningful Memorial Day Weekend
As we return to our routines, let’s pause and remember the true reason for Memorial Day — to honor the brave men and women who gave their lives for our freedom. We thank them for their sacrifice and their fight, so we can enjoy the good life as a community.

Not this weekend, but next- is something we can all be excited about—Springfield Days! Brought to your by our awesome community, and it’s packed with fun for everyone. Let’s kick things off together starting Friday, June 6th.

Friday evening, head over to the Springfield Library parking lot starting at 5pm for a hot dog dinner. It’s a great way to gather with neighbors, enjoy a quick bite, and support the library. Pro tip: this is also where you can pick up your Lucky Duck Race tickets! There’ll be family lawn games for the kids and kids at heart, so bring everyone down.

At 6pm inside the library, you won’t want to miss Wildlife Encounters—a fun and educational experience for all ages. Then from 7 to 9pm, we’re turning up the volume with a Family Dance Party featuring SCHOOL OF ROCK. That’s right, we’re dancing at the library parking lot. Let’s go all out!

Saturday is packed full of activities, so pace yourself. The day starts early with the Steeplechase 1-mile walk or run at St. Joseph’s. For more info and to register, head to stjosephspringfield.org/steeplechase.

Also on Saturday morning, there’s a pancake breakfast from 8am to 10:30am at First United Methodist Church—come hungry! Then swing by the Springfield Library for the book sale from 9am to 12pm. Free-will donations accepted—come find your next great read.

From noon to 5pm, food trucks will be set up, and don’t forget to stop by the pie parlor for dessert. If you’re feeling competitive, the cornhole tournament at the Sarpy County Fairgrounds starts registration at 10am.

At 1pm, head back to the Springfield Library for a special presentation—Ghosts of Sarpy County with Paul Maudlin. For something new and fun, check out the BT Party Cove Open House starting at noon. Looks like a great spot for future get-togethers!

At 4pm, don’t miss the big event—the Grand Parade! This year’s Grand Marshal is Dorothy Foged, and if you’ve been around awhile, you might remember her from the good old Highway Diner days. That place had a reputation even before many of us moved to town!

What have I been talking about nonstop? The Lucky Duck Race! That’s 500 rubber duckies splashing down Main Street and racing to the finish. Want a chance at one of the great prizes? You’ve got to buy a ticket. All proceeds go to the Springfield Library and help keep the fun going all year long.

Saturday also brings plenty of fun to Urban Park. There’s a foam party from 12 to 2pm that’s sure to be a hit with the kids. Then at 3pm, we have a pet and stuffed animal parade, followed by the kiddie parade at 3:30pm. How cute is that? Bingo kicks off at noon, and from 2 to 4pm, the Dale Downe Band will be playing live music—bring your lawn chairs and enjoy.

And don’t forget about the heart of our town—our Main Street businesses. Need a pick-me-up between events? Stop by Black Sheep Coffee for your caffeine fix. And when you get hungry, Sweet Rice Thai Food has you covered with delicious eats right here in Springfield.

Let’s get out there, support our town, and enjoy everything Springfield has to offer this weekend. See you at Springfield Days!

It Happen in Springfield

An Abridged Account of Springfield Founder, James D. Spearman’s Early Years
For those of you who familiar with the beginnings of Springfield, it is well known the Captain James
Dawson Spearman was the founder of the town of Springfield in 1881. What has not been widely
published is his early years. Captain Spearman led an eventful life before moving to Sarpy County. He
was born near Jacksonville, Illinois on March 9, 1833 to parents who were Kentucky pioneers. The family
eventually moved to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa just after the close of the Blackhawk War.
Captain Spearman began his education in the common schools of Mt. Pleasant. In 1851, at the age of 18,
he joined a group traveling to California, crossing the plains with an ox team. While in California, he
engaged in mining for two years.
On his return to the East via the Isthmus of Panama, the ship he was on was attacked by pirates.
Thankfully, he was among other stranded passengers who were rescued by a passing vessel. After
returning to Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, he took up farming until he volunteered for the Union Army during the
Civil War.
In the fall of 1862, Spearman was commissioned to train a company of 105 volunteers and was
subsequently promoted to the rank of Captain. He served under Generals Sherman and Grant and in 1863
participated in the battle at Vicksburg, where he sustained a gunshot to his hip that led to partial paralysis.
He was discharged from the service in April 1864.
Upon returning to Mt. Pleasant, he resumed farming until 1869, when he ventured into the merchandising
business. In 1871, Spearman relocated to Nebraska, settling on a farm about 1½ miles south of what is
now Springfield. After seven years, he moved to the Sarpy Center area, where he attempted to plat a town
that never fully developed. In 1881, he successfully platted the town of Springfield, which thrived with
the construction of the Missouri Pacific Railroad.
During Springfield Days, local historian, Paul Mauldin, will share tales of the “Ghost Towns” of Sarpy
County. Come learn about towns, such as Sarpy Center, and other towns that are no longer in existence.
The program will be at Springfield Memorial Library on Saturday June 7 at 1:00 p.m.

Fit Tip of the Week – Walking!

A perfect way to get moving and train for the upcoming Springfield Days Steeplechase 5K Fun Run/Walk or One Mile Walk. This fun community event supports the Methodist Food Pantry—so your steps do more than boost your health, they help others too!

Insurance Tip of the Week – Review Your Deductibles Annually

Your deductible is what you pay out of pocket before your insurance kicks in—but did you know it can change without you noticing? Some companies adjust deductibles based on home value or percentage models (like 2% of your dwelling coverage).

Tip: Review your policy each year to make sure your deductibles are still a good fit for your budget—especially with rising home values and inflation.

COME ON OVER!

This is the way country music started out, with acoustic instruments, before electricity.  People sat out on the lawn, on the porch, or in a friend’s house and played their instruments together.

Enjoy the originality of music which is still present in many circles of friends.
