SPRINGFIELD AREA MASTER GARDENERS NEWS

How do you choose flowers or shrubs for your garden? Which flower or shrub is the one you make sure and plant or carefully maintain every year? Mom's peonies, grandma's irises, or you have to plant those pink things that you can never remember the name of but they are so pretty. It's time to start making a garden journal. Just a place where you can make a map of where everything was planted. A place to maybe keep the plant tags so you can identify the plant when someone says, "That's so pretty. What is it?"

For me, it's identifying some of the mainstays at the garden. The big Hydrangea in the middle of the perennial bed is a Limelight Hydrangea. I kept saying some other name. Generally about a 10" head and can grow 6' to 8'. We call ours "Henry" and he takes that entire bed but is absolutely gorgeous.  He gets a haircut in the spring which means he comes back from old wood. We wait until we see spring growth before we "gently" trim away. Fertilizer of 10-10-10 and needs to be watered about once a week. You can put them in containers but I have never tried. The worst enemy we've had so far is Japanese beetles. Next week another plant unless you let Connie know if you have a question.  Bye for now!
Grow Green!!!

Cattlemens Ball Volunteers

Don’t miss out on being part of one of the biggest events to take place in Cass County!

The Cattlemen’s Ball of Nebraska, a charity whose mission is to raise money for cancer research through an annual fundraiser, is taking place at the Cass County Fairgrounds in Weeping Water, Neb., on Friday, June 3, and Saturday, June 4. The Ball is a completely volunteer-run event, and we need YOUR help to make it a success!

As a volunteer, you'll join us in our goal of raising $2 million for cancer research at the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center in Omaha, Neb. From the Art Tent to the General Store, and from wine tastings to the set-up crew, we have a volunteer opportunity right for you! Or, if you're unsure of where you'd best fit, we'll place you in a volunteer role based on need.

And don't fret - we want you to enjoy the event - so we're only asking for a few hours of your time!

Head on over to https://cattlemensball.com/volunteers to learn more and to register to volunteer! We cannot wait to see you there!
