MAIN STREET ROAD WORK
Road improvements on Main Street from L A Bates to 10th Avenue are currently underway. Residents should expect ongoing Main Street closures in various forms over the next several weeks. Depending on the need of construction, road access may be limited to only one lane or both lanes closed at times. Please be prepared to use an alternate route at any point.
Driveways to Springfield State Bank and Springfield Memorial Library remain open.
Driveway access to Springfield Elementary is impacted. Both drives may be out of service at the same time, which will affect access to the school.
The goal is to have both driveways at the school complete and open by August 11, so as not to impact driveway access when school opens on August 18.
Unfortunately, the parade route for the Sarpy County Fair will be reduced due to construction. The parade will begin on South 6th Street instead of South 9th as originally planned.
Please be patient during this construction phase to improve Springfield’s Main Street.
PLATTEVIEW ROAD IMPROVEMENT
Platteview Road from 2nd Street to 5th Avenue will begin this Fall with new asphalt overlayment. Please be patient during the road construction work and the associated lane impactments.

IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY

The annual Old Settlers Picnic was a Springfield tradition by 1914, the year this photo was taken.
On August 21, 1907, Springfield held its first Industrial Parade and Old Settlers Picnic. The businessmen of the town united with the Old Settlers Association of Sarpy County to organize the event. The Sarpy County Old Settlers Association’s primary purpose was to bring the early residents of the county in closer touch with one another and preserve pioneer associations and memories. The only qualification was to be a resident of Sarpy County for twenty-five years and pay a fee of twenty-five cents. The first celebration in 1907 was wildly successful with approximately 3,000 people spilling into Springfield that hot summer day. It made perfect sense for centrally located Springfield to host the event for all of Sarpy County. The town of Springfield hosted the event for many years to come. Eventually the Old Settlers organization donated their funds and location to the Fair Board for the Sarpy County Fair.
