Bicentennial Celebration

This week another story features the American Revolution Bicentennial June 26, 1976, celebration in Springfield. The entire day included events, performances, award ceremonies, demonstrations, and entertainment. Annie Smith was recognized as the longest continuous resident of Springfield. She lived in for 68 years.  Roy Sack was the oldest resident at 93 years old. Beard contest winners were: Phil Kiehl in the untrimmed division, Gary Luenenborg in the trimmed division. The Moustache competition winner was Mick Kreifels.  George Green and Steve Adair won the Mutton chops and Goatee divisions.  The Bicentennial essay contest was won by Susan Widdicombe along with second place winner, Sheryl Siewert, and third place by Dan Scholting. Steve Lincoln won the horseshoe pitching competition. Fred Ostransky came in second and Bill Williams, third. The new Springfield Park name voting resulted in choosing Buffalo Park for the new name. A slide show given by Inez Chapek highlighted Springfield history.  Many more events filled the celebration. The day was not without a hitch, as a late afternoon thunderstorm and tornado warning alert caused some outside events to move indoors.
