Springfield Booster Club float was on display. The float was appeared in several parades that summer.
SPRINGFIELD'S 1976 BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
In 1976, the United States of America celebrated its bicentennial. The community of Springfield planned a celebration of our country’s two hundredth anniversary. The Springfield Bicentennial committee, led by Platteview High School band teacher Robert Leigh, applied for and received special designation as a Bicentennial Community for the June 26th celebration. Area organizations and community members all came together to plan programs and activities during the preceding months. The town took on an Americana themed look with the Springfield Women’s Club painting the Main Street Bridge red, white, and blue, the 4-H club painting the fire hydrants with red, blue, and white stars, and a mural painted by Platteview High School Art students on the corner building at 1st & Main Street. Red, white and blue flower pots lined Main Street. The day was a great success with thirty-two local organizations and many individuals giving their time, talent and monetary donations to celebrate our country’s bicentennial year.
