IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY

Springfield eventually became home to one of the only hatcheries in Sarpy County. Orville Kreifels opened his Springfield poultry business in 1947. Soon he was joined by his brother, Allen. The original Kreifels Hatchery building on the north side of Main Street was purchased from the W. E. Miller estate. The Kreifels brothers provided complete poultry services with quality chicks, poultry equipment, poultry houses, feeds, remedies, and supplies.  As the demand for Kreifels chicks grew, the hatchery purchased two buildings on the south side of Main Street. One building was used for incubators and the other as a warehouse. In 1989 after forty-two years in business, Orville and Allen decided to sell their hatchery business to Central Hatchery in Norfolk and the buildings on Main Street were sold. Allen estimated the business had hatched over 20 million chicks.  Not ready to fully retire, they continued operating Kreifels Enterprises moving their local offices to 510 Maple Street.

SARPY COUNTY HELP LINE

The Sarpy County Sheriff's Office along with Sarpy County Human Services has established a help line for the citizens of Sarpy County during the COVID-19 pandemic event. Starting today, people who are sick, elderly, or caretakers of this demographic in Sarpy County may call the Sarpy County Sheriff Helpline at 402-593-1593 for needs such as picking up prescriptions, groceries, or other necessities. OPPD

OPPD makes $34.4 million in payments in-lieu-of tax

Sarpy County’s share is $6.6 million

Omaha Public Power District distributed in-lieu-of-tax payments totaling $34.4 million to 11 southeast Nebraska counties. That’s up slightly from nearly $34 million distributed last year. Payments were made April 1.

OPPD’s payment to Sarpy County totaled $6,624,988, up substantially from $5,540,436 paid last year.

In-lieu-of-tax payment amounts are based on 5% of OPPD’s gross revenues from the previous year’s retail electricity sales in incorporated cities and towns, and they take the place of property taxes.

County treasurers distribute the funds to school districts, cities and other entities to fund needed services and improvements.

In addition to in-lieu-of-tax payments, the district pays general sales taxes, gasoline taxes, motor vehicle license fees and permit fees like any other business. A full list of the payments made to each county follows:

Douglas:  $26,342,312

Sarpy:  $6,624,988

Washington:  $646,430

Saunders:  $317,658

Cass:  $277,106

Dodge:  $145,490

Nemaha:  $38,603

Johnson:  $14,045

Richardson:  $13,620

Otoe:  $3,954

Colfax:  $3,902

M.U.D. & OPPD customers can apply for

new state rental and utility assistance program

Renters and landlords who are struggling financially because of COVID-19 can now apply for assistance with rent and utilities under the state’s new Emergency Rental Assistance Program. The program, which recently launched, is funded through the U.S. Treasury as part of a federal coronavirus relief package.

Omaha Public Power District and Metropolitan Utilities District want to encourage customers who qualify for the program to apply. Customers within Douglas County, the City of Omaha, Lancaster County and the City of Lincoln do not qualify for the state’s program because those areas are receiving federal funds directly. They will operate rental and utility assistance programs separately from the State.

To learn more about the state’s program, customers should visit coronavirus.nebraska.gov. They can also call 1-833-500-8810 to reach the state’s contact center for more information, including eligibility guidelines, documentation requirements, and additional utility assistance programs.

 To apply, visit: https://mcrcares.servicenowservices.com/nebraska_rental_assistance

Customers may reach utilities directly to find out what other financial help may be available:

  • For information on M.U.D.’s assistance program, customers may visit mudomaha.com/covid19relief or call 502-554-6666 in the Omaha area, or toll-free outside of the area at 1-800-732-5864.
  • OPPD customers may visit oppd.com/EAP for more information. Those within the Omaha area can also call 402-536-4131 or 1-800-536-4131 toll-free, outside of the Omaha calling area.
