IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY

Pictured left to right: Tom Jr., Rick, Mike, Shirley, and Tom
On a snowy day, March 15, 1964, B & B Garage opened for their first day of business. Roy Kiger sold Kiger & Sons Garage to brothers, Gary & Tom Buskirk. Dales Hanes worked for Kiger for 15 years as a mechanic and continued to work for B & B Garage. Eventually Tom bought out Gary’s portion of the business. With sons Tom Jr, Rick, and Mike, Tom provided a full-service garage selling Mobil products and service. They also continued the tank wagon gasoline service to local farmers and added a wrecker service. In 1989 a decision was made to stop selling gasoline at the garage and to nearby farmers by way of the tank wagon. Regulations were becoming too stringent. B&B Garage was always a family business with Tom’s wife, Shirley, keeping the books and daughter Linda helping when needed. Today Tom and Shirley’s son, Rick runs the business. B &B Garage is the longest privately owned business in Springfield.

M.U.D. & OPPD customers can apply for
new state rental and utility assistance program
Renters and landlords who are struggling financially because of COVID-19 can now apply for assistance with rent and utilities under the state’s new Emergency Rental Assistance Program. The program, which recently launched, is funded through the U.S. Treasury as part of a federal coronavirus relief package.
Omaha Public Power District and Metropolitan Utilities District want to encourage customers who qualify for the program to apply. Customers within Douglas County, the City of Omaha, Lancaster County and the City of Lincoln do not qualify for the state’s program because those areas are receiving federal funds directly. They will operate rental and utility assistance programs separately from the State.
To learn more about the state’s program, customers should visit coronavirus.nebraska.gov. They can also call 1-833-500-8810 to reach the state’s contact center for more information, including eligibility guidelines, documentation requirements, and additional utility assistance programs.
To apply, visit: https://mcrcares.servicenowservices.com/nebraska_rental_assistance
Customers may reach utilities directly to find out what other financial help may be available:
- For information on M.U.D.’s assistance program, customers may visit mudomaha.com/covid19relief or call 402-554-6666 in the Omaha area, or toll-free outside of the area at 1-800-732-5864.
- OPPD customers may visit oppd.com/EAP for more information. Those within the Omaha area can also call 402-536-4131 or 1-800-536-4131 toll-free, outside of the Omaha calling area.
