Sarpy and Cass County residents born in 1956 or before are now eligible to schedule an appointment to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. Please visit https://www.sarpycasshealthdepartment.org/myturn to view clinic opportunities.

At this time the amount vaccine in our community is extremely limited and the demand for vaccine is high. Please be patient as appointments fill up quickly.

You are responsible for scheduling your own appointment for a COVID-19 vaccination appointment. If you need assistance, please consider asking a friend or family member to assist you in scheduling an appointment.

If you have any questions regarding the COVID-19 vaccine or if you are having difficulties scheduling an appointment, please call the Sarpy/Cass Department at 402-339-4334 and press option 1. Please note that phones are answered Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.

If you have already completed the Sarpy/Cass Health Department's pre-registration form, you do not need to register through DHHS.

Sheplers

In 1948, Art Adair and Bob Shelper purchased Kieck’s grocery business. Shepler purchased Adair’s portion in 1951. The business became known as Sheplers Grocery. Sheplers housed a frozen food locker and offered Saturday morning delivery. Bob was a born storyteller who loved to share his memories with his customers. Bob and his wife Orlou worked side by side at the grocery store. By the 1970’s Sheplers Grocery employed six full time employees, including Bob, and four part time employees. In 1982 Bob and Orlou sold the store and retired. It was time to travel and spend winters in Texas with friends.

March 1^st, 2021 marked the 154st anniversary of Nebraska’s statehood. In 1867, President Andrew Johnson signed the proclamation for the Nebraska territory to become the 37^th state to join the union. Happy Birthday!

National Unplugging Day

March 6, 2021

National Unplugging Day is a day to unplug from technology, electronics, and social media for twenty-four hours. It gives us a chance to rest, unwind, and reset.

Other than working, the rest of your day can be spent with family and friends, connecting with nature, exercising, reading, and finally cleaning out that closet. Disconnecting from technology also contributes to better sleep. Start your day on March 6^th by turning off your smart phone, television, computer, and gaming system to celebrate this National Day!

SARPY COUNTY HELP LINE

The Sarpy County Sheriff's Office along with Sarpy County Human Services has established a help line for the citizens of Sarpy County during the COVID-19 pandemic event. Starting today, people who are sick, elderly, or caretakers of this demographic in Sarpy County may call the Sarpy County Sheriff Helpline at 402-593-1593 for needs such as picking up prescriptions, groceries, or other necessities. A uniformed Sarpy County Sheriff's Deputy will pick up and deliver these items in a marked police cruiser. This helpline may also be utilized by the general public to make non-emergency police reports via telephone that do not require a police officer present in their home.

UTILITY ASSISTANCE FUNDRAISER GOES VIRTUAL FOR 2021,

WITH GREATER NEED

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted people across our communities both physically and financially. Combined, Omaha Public Power District and Metropolitan Utilities District have seen a 38% increase in the number of customers requesting assistance with their bills.

The utilities are coming together, as they do every year, to raise money for energy assistance programs through the Heat the Streets Run & Walk for Warmth, which will take place March 6, 2021. This is the 14^th year of the event. This year, it will be held virtually in order to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

While utility assistance is a year-round need, this event is held during the cold winter months to bring attention to those who struggle to keep the lights on and heat their homes.

“Keeping homes warm and safe has taken on an even higher priority within the last year,” said Tanya Cook, director, M.U.D. Board of Directors. “I'm proud to lend my support to this event."

Cook is co-chairing this year’s event, alongside Janece Mollhoff, director, OPPD Board of Directors, and her husband, Wayne Mollhoff.

“We are seeing a record number of first-time applicants. These are customers who have never needed to reach out for help before,” said Director Mollhoff. “It’s clear the pandemic has taken its toll. We need to support our communities through the recovery.”

OPPD and M.U.D. encourage participants to complete the 5K run or one-mile walk on March 6 on their own – in neighborhoods, local trails, or even on a treadmill. Custom neck gaiters will be mailed to all registrants.

Participants in the 5K may submit their results online. Awards will be mailed to the first-, second- and third-place male and female runners in each of the following age divisions:

12 and under, 13-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, and 60+

Virtual 5K price:

$35 (Now through March 6)

Virtual one-mile walk price:

$25 (Now through March 6)

Children 12 and under receive free registration for the one-mile walk with a paid adult.
