IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY

 HazelLatham

First "Springfielder at Heart" winner, Hazel Latham

Spr Heart1999 copy

The 1999 recipients,  Jack and Judy Latham. They were joined by past award winners: left to right: Allen Kreifels, Tom Buskirk, Jack Latham, Judy Latham, Bob Shelper, Darrell Gottsch, Heine Gottsch.

This year we missed the annual Springfield Community Dinner and Springfielder at Heart award ceremony normally held the second Saturday in December. The award originally began as part of a Nebraska state-wide promotion titled “Nebraskan at Heart” in 1988. A group of Springfield community members nominated and voted on deserving community members who volunteered and contributed to the Springfield community. They chose life-long resident, Hazel Latham, who well-earned the recognition. The award ceremony took place during Springfield Days and was presented by Mayor Duane Neitzel. The tradition continued throughout the years but is normally held during the annual Springfield Community Dinner.  Currently award winners are nominated and voted on by past Springfielder at Heart recipients.  Many thanks to Bob and Amy Green who have organize this event for many years along with a team of volunteers.

Celebrate National Bird Day

January 5, 2021

National Bird Day has been celebrated for just over a decade. It happens to coincide with the Christmas Bird Count which actually takes place for three weeks. The bird count focuses on native bird populations. Celebrate National Bird Day by bird watching, researching birds, building a birdhouse, or feeding the birds. Create a fun family activity!

SARPY COUNTY HELP LINE

The Sarpy County Sheriff's Office along with Sarpy County Human Services has established a help line for the citizens of Sarpy County during the COVID-19 pandemic event. Starting today, people who are sick, elderly, or caretakers of this demographic in Sarpy County may call the Sarpy County Sheriff Helpline at 402-593-1593 for needs such as picking up prescriptions, groceries, or other necessities. A uniformed Sarpy County Sheriff's Deputy will pick up and deliver these items in a marked police cruiser. This helpline may also be utilized by the general public to make non-emergency police reports via telephone that do not require a police officer present in their home.

The following providers are participating in this program:

Bakers at 36th St & Twin Creek Dr
