Welcome Back
Hey Springfield, hope you had a great Easter and the rain didn’t ruin any of your weekend plans. Now let’s talk about our great community and something important happening this weekend.
This Saturday, April 26, the Springfield Volunteer Fire and Rescue is holding a Free-Will Donation Drive-Thru Hamburger Fundraiser at 505 S 1st Street. They’ll be serving hand-pressed grilled hamburgers, chips, and a yummy dessert. All made by the amazing volunteers who help us out when we need them most.
Their goal is to raise $12,000. The money will help purchase equipment and training that their regular budget doesn’t cover. This includes a new skid unit for their current brush truck, outfitting their new UTV with wildland firefighter gear, and adding another brush truck.
So head over, grab some dinner, and be sure to thank them. We’re lucky to have such a strong volunteer team.
Also, did you know they help out with the Lucky Duck Race? That’s coming up on Saturday, June 7. Not many Saturdays left until those rubber duckies head down Main Street.
Here are the top 3 prizes for this year’s race:
- A 10 by 10 room painted by professionals (check out Dylan’s work at purepaints.org)
- A family pass to Luminarium
- A Springfield basket full of goodies from local favorites
Now, here’s a look at the weather for the week ahead:
Weather Forecast | April 23–29
- Wednesday, April 23: 66° / 44°, slight chance of rain
- Thursday, April 24: 68° / 45°, mostly clear
- Friday, April 25: 68° / 47°, dry and mild
- Saturday, April 26: 66° / 47°, great weather for the fundraiser
- Sunday, April 27: 66° / 45°, sunny and calm
- Monday, April 28: 65° / 45°, clear skies
- Tuesday, April 29: 66° / 48°, partly cloudy
That’s it for this week. Thanks for being part of what makes Springfield such a great place to live.

For several reasons, mostly to ensure that all student and staff only enter the school in 1 location, we have changed our policy on parking. Students are now allowed access to the west lot if they choose to park there. We have piloted this change for the last week and it has gone well. Things get a little more congested at dismissal but we have been clearing the west lot in no more than 9 minutes the last week. To help maintain the crucial safety of the bus/drop-off lane, I wanted to share 2 graphics to help guide drivers through.
One suggestion for adults who pick up their kids after school, meet them in the north lot. That would cut down a little of the congestion right at dismissal and keep you entirely away from the bus lane.

It Happen in Springfield
Springfield’s first convenience store opened in 1985 and was located just to the northwest of Springfield on Highway 50 in the old Countryside Rock Shop. After leasing the building from landowner, Leo Timmerman, the Rock Shop was remodeled by the owner of the Gretna Short Stop, Jim Gerhken. The
Springfield Short Stop convenience store offered self-serve gas, groceries, deli sandwiches, fountain pop, coffee, soft serve ice cream and slushies. Mark Bishop was the first store manager when the store opened on Saturday, January 30 th . The store remained under Gerhken’s ownership until 1989 when he sold the business to Bob and Shirley Alderson. Does anyone remember when the Short Stop closed?
After closing, the building was eventually torn down but the entrance to the Short Stop is still located across from the entrance to the Springfield Cemetery..
