MAIN STREET ROAD WORK

Road improvements on Main Street from L A Bates to 10th Avenue are currently underway. Residents should expect ongoing Main Street closures in various forms over the next several weeks. Depending on the need of construction, road access may be limited to only one lane or both lanes closed at times. Please be prepared to use an alternate route at any point.

Please be patient during this construction phase to improve Springfield’s Main Street.

PLATTEVIEW ROAD IMPROVEMENT

Platteview Road from 2nd Street to 5th Avenue will begin this Fall with new asphalt overlayment. Please be patient during the road construction work and the associated lane impactments.

NEBRASKA 9/11 MEMORIAL STAIR CLIMB

In remembrance of the 20th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, members of the public will join area firefighters to climb the stairs of the Werner Park Stadium in honor of the 343 firefighters from the FDNY who died while trying to save others.

Join the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF) on September 11, 2021, for the Nebraska 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at the Werner Park Stadium, 12356 Ballpark Way, Papillion, NE. Each participant pays tribute to a FDNY firefighter by climbing or walking the equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center. Registration is $30. Everyone will receive a photo ID of one of the fallen heroes of September 11th. Onsite registration will begin at 7:30 am with Opening Ceremonies beginning at 8:15 am. “The 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is an opportunity for anyone in the community to demonstrate respect and admiration for these courageous men who gave their lives trying to save others. Springfield's wood water towers were located just to the south of Main Street between 2nd & 3rd Streets

The steel water tower built in 1940 was installed to the east of 4th & Main Street in an empty lot.

Springfield's Water Towers

After the March 1903 fire destroyed a majority of the south side Main Street businesses, the town proposed installing a water system. The vote was put before Springfield residents. On July 21, 1903, one hundred five people went to the polls to decide. With eighty-two votes for and twenty-three votes against, the water tower bond carried. Immediately after, bids were submitted to the town council by a number of different contractors. The winning bid went to J.B. Nicholson for $6,873.75. The first water tower was built in 1904 and was constructed out of wood. The tower leaked from the beginning. Finally in 1917, the water tower exploded and sent 10,000 gallons of water rushing downward. The city council wanted to replace it with a steel one but another wooden one was constructed. In 1940 a steel water tower was finally built. The wood water tower #2 was relocated to Richfield. Water tower #2 still stands today in Richfield.
