It Happened in Springfield History

Don Buskirk recalled his first customer Mick Kreifels was 8 or 9 years old when he first opened Buskirks Barber Shop on Main Street.
When Don Buskirk opened Buskirk’s Barber Shop on Main Street in 1960, haircuts cost $1.25, a shampoo or shave cost $.75 and a massage with a facial pack cost $1.25. His very first customer was Mick Kreifels who waited patiently for hours to be the first one to have his hair cut in the shop. During the 1960’s the barber shop was open Wednesday and Saturday until 9:00p.m. On Saturday nights it was not uncommon for ten to twelve customers to be waiting in line for his barber shop services. Buskirk purchased the lot and building on Main Street. He tore down the old building and built a new one for his shop which opened in August, 1960. Don hung up his shears in 1994 after thirty-seven years of owning Buskirk’s Barber Shop. And yes, Mick Kreifels continued to get his haircut at the shop throughout all those years.
The City of Springfield is accepting applications through May 12, 2021.
