October is also National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, so as we move into the month, take a minute to make sure you are protecting yourself online. Strong passwords, updates, and being careful about what you click can go a long way. CISA reminds us that cybersecurity is something we all have a part in.
NOW LET'S TALK ABOUT OUR COMMUNITY!
Springfield has a GREAT community, and one of the things I love most is seeing people step up, start something new, share their talents, and support one another.
ARTS & CRAFTS IN SPRINGFIELD -Margie Z. Trembley @ Springfield Artwork is bringing some fun new classes to the community. The first class is October 17 from 9:30 a.m. to noon. The project has a Japanese-inspired fabric patchwork look, and the best part—NO SEWING! This class is beginner-friendly, so if you have never tried it before, this is a great chance to learn something new. There are only a few spaces available, so grab a couple of friends and make a morning of it. The second class will be a gourd or pumpkin project that you can create to decorate your holiday table. You will be able to choose your own colors, with lots of options available. The date will be announced later. Adults only.

Springfield Strength Training Center is located in Springfield Square, just south of Chad's Auto, at 631 South 1st Street, Bay #6.
They have several racks with free weights, bumper plates, dumbbells from 5–100 pounds, a lat pulldown machine, multifunction cable machine, dip station, kettlebells, jump ropes, treadmills, assault bikes, a rower, recumbent bicycle, resistance bands, slam balls, and plenty of other equipment.
They have also gotten their electronic locks installed, so they are ready to FIRE ON ALL CYLINDERS! And keep an eye out for their giveaway!

PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE — SPRINGFIELD
A public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, October 13, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at Springfield City Hall before the Springfield Planning Commission. The hearing concerns a proposed development of approximately 154.17 acres located near the southeast corner of 132nd Street and Platteview Road.
The requests include:
A zoning change from AR Agriculture Residential to R50 Two-Family Residential for Lots 1–559 and Outlots A–N.
A zoning change from AR Agriculture Residential to MU Mixed Use for Lot 560.
Approval of a preliminary plat for Lots 1–560 and Outlots A–N, known as Fairmont.
Property owners within 300 feet received this notice, and the public is encouraged to attend. Residents may provide testimony, comments, concerns, suggestions or observations at the hearing. Written comments may also be submitted to the City Clerk before the hearing.

Springfield History
Springfield’s Opera House
Springfield’s Opera House was a two-story building situated at the northwest corner of 3rd and Main Street. Built by selling shares to local residents, this iconic venue served as the social hub of Springfield at the turn of the twentieth century.
All civic and school events were hosted at the Opera House, including:
Plays
Graduations
Movies
Dances
Musical programs
The second floor was designated as a meeting space for the Woodman of the World Lodge and the Royal Neighbors of America Lodge, as well as for serving food during special occasions. Unfortunately, it was demolished in 1939 following the construction of the SpringfieldCommunity Building on 1st and Main Street.

October Fit Tip: Don't fall off the wagon!
Here's your October reminder from me: Don't wait until January to decide you're going to take care of yourself. Get up. Move your body. Lift something. Take a walk. Eat some good food. Drink your water. Get outside. And quit telling yourself you have to be perfect before you start. You don't need a new year. You need TODAY. But October has another meaning for me. When I was writing Treadmill Rambles, I spent time reading The Book of Wisdom, also known as The Wisdom of Solomon, in the Catholic Bible. I was so inspired by what I read that I dedicated a month to it in my book: October — Same Runner, New Wisdom. And here's what hit me: wisdom isn't just something you read about. Wisdom is something you put into action. It's learning. It's growing. It's making better choices. It's having the discipline to do what you know you need to do—even when you don't feel like doing it. Sound familiar? That's fitness too. We don't build strength by thinking about lifting weights. We build it by lifting them. We don't improve our health by talking about taking a walk. We take the walk. And we don't grow in wisdom just by reading the words. We have to LIVE them. So this October, let's work on all three: stronger body, stronger mind, stronger faith. Don't wait for January. Start today. KEEP ON. KEEP ON. Now let's get moving and see what else is happening around Springfield!

Keep it simple. Eat right. Work out hard. Recover. Repeat.

Did You Know?
DID YOU KNOW? In 1958, Springfield and the surrounding rural communities made a BIG decision. Residents from 13 rural Class 1 school districts voted to come together and form one Class III school district. And they didn't just barely pass it—the vote was 6 to 1 in favor, with 70% of voters showing up! Just one year later, the community approved an $890,000 bond with 85% support to purchase land and build a new junior/senior high school. Platteview Junior/Senior High School opened in 1960. Fast forward to today and look how much has changed! Schools have been added, buildings expanded, gyms built, weight rooms added, classrooms modernized, and in 2026 voters approved another $79.9 million bond with no increase to the tax levy rate. That's quite a history of a community investing in its kids! From 13 rural school districts coming together in 1958 to the Springfield Platteview Community Schools we know today, one thing hasn't changed: this community believes in building for the next generation. Now THAT is Springfield strong!
