IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY

 History police

Police Officer, Tom Durant, served Springfield in the 1970's.

Until the mid-1970’s, Springfield maintained its own police force. A full-time marshal covered the daytime hours with an assistant covering night-time hours. In 1972, the village board established a police department with the hiring of police chief, Tom Durant; Mrs. Sandra Durant, police matron, dispatcher, special deputy; and patrolmen: Howard Clark, Clifford Baldwin, Sr., Bill Miller, and Gene Cox. Ivan Novak, village board member was the police commissioner and LeRoy Schacht, the assistant police commissioner. In 1974, the village board began discussing the possibility of combining Springfield’s police department with the Sarpy County Sheriff’s department. After negotiating with Sarpy County for law enforcement services,  the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Department began serving Springfield on October 1, 1975.  The last Springfield police chief was Howard Clark.
