IT HAPPENED IN SPRINGFIELD HISTORY
Country School: Sarpy Center School District #23
The first Sarpy Center school house came into existence in approximately 1869 –1870. It was located across the street from the town of Sarpy Center at what is now 113th & Fairview Rd. In 1879 a new school was built in the same location. After Sarpy Center School District #23 voted for bonds in the sum of $2000 to erect a new school, a two-room frame building was constructed in 1900-01. It was one of the larger country schools in Sarpy County. On January 17, 1901 the old school was sold to the highest bidder for fifty dollars. Ms. Gladys Boeckner recalled teaching K-3rd grades at Sarpy Center for one year in the 1950’s. Classes ranged from 4-7 students per grade. The teacher was the principal, nurse, and janitor. The school was modern with a gas furnace and indoor plumbing. Sadly, Sarpy Center country school closed in 1959 with the School District #46 merger. The school house was remodeled into a residence.
