Springfield Wednesday Newsletter - JUNE 24

WELCOME BACK!

Hey Springfield, As of June 21, it’s officially summer!

And this Sunday it’s here—the Springfield Farmers Market, the all-American farmers market we look forward to all season long.

Let’s get patriotic and show up strong for our local vendors! Bring the family, call your friends, and let’s fill the town with community energy, good food, and hometown pride.

It’s a great time to support local, connect with neighbors, and enjoy everything our summer season has to offer.

And come hungry! Be sure to stop by and grab some delicious homemade kolaches from our vendor, The Kolache Kitchen. Word on the street is they’ll even have gluten-free options available this year. YUM!

See you Sunday!

Warm weather  means more kids are out enjoying the neighborhood, riding bikes, walking to friends' houses, and playing outside. It also means we have many new drivers on our roads as teens work on learning to drive and gaining experience behind the wheel.

Please remember that new drivers are often nervous and still building confidence. Give them a little extra patience, allow plenty of space, and avoid riding their tail. A few extra seconds of kindness can go a long way in helping young drivers learn safely.

It’s also a great time to hop on your bike, grab some ice cream, and enjoy everything Springfield has to offer this summer!

100 Years and Still Checking Out Great Stories!!!

The Springfield Memorial Library is celebrating its 100th Anniversary with a special Library Festival on Saturday, June 27th at 7:00 p.m.

That's right—100 years! Talk about a story worth reading! For a century, our library has helped Springfield residents turn pages, open minds, and write new chapters in their lives. Now it's time to book some fun and celebrate this incredible milestone together.

The evening will feature entertainment by Omaha Street Percussion (OSP), known for their high-energy performances that transform ordinary objects into extraordinary music. The celebration will take place outside the Springfield Memorial Library and promises fun for readers, dreamers, and community members of all ages.

For 100 years, our library has been much more than a building filled with books. It has been a place of learning, imagination, community, and connection. So don't shelve your plans for the evening—join your neighbors as we celebrate a century of stories and look forward to the next 100 years of serving Springfield.

Here's to the next chapter!

 Lasagna Love Now Serving Springfield

Life can be a lot sometimes. Financial struggles, health challenges, caring for loved ones, or simply trying to keep up with the demands of everyday life can leave people feeling overwhelmed. The reality is that many people who need help don't always show it.

That's where Lasagna Love comes in. This wonderful volunteer-driven organization connects neighbors with neighbors by delivering free homemade lasagnas to individuals and families who could use a little extra support. There are no strings attached, no income requirements, and no judgment—just a warm meal and a reminder that someone cares.

We are excited to share that volunteers are now serving the Springfield area. If you or someone you know could benefit from a free home-cooked meal, whether due to financial, emotional, family, or health-related challenges, help is available.

Sometimes the greatest gift is simply knowing you're not alone.

To learn more or request a meal, visit Lasagna Love at www.lasagnalove.org/request.

On January 9, 1975, members of the Springfield Woman’s Club met with representatives of the Springfield Park Board at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Sayer. Park Board members in attendance were Robert Leigh, Gene Abrahamson, and William Sayer.
During the meeting, Woman’s Club members discussed various ways to assist the Park Board in raising funds for the development of the new Springfield Park. The Woman’s Club CommunityImprovement Committee agreed to lead the fundraising efforts for the project. Committee members included Mrs. Charles Broshears, Mrs. Charles Capek, and Mrs. William Sayer. On Friday, April 18, 1975, the Springfield Woman’s Club hosted a fundraising spaghetti dinner at the Springfield Community Building. The event was held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with all proceeds dedicated to the development of the new Springfield Park.

Insurance Tip of the Week: Know What Your Insurance Actually Covers

A lot of people assume “I’m covered” means everything is covered — but that’s where surprises hit.

One big blind spot: animal damage.

Damage from animals (like rodents chewing wiring, birds nesting, raccoons in attics, or squirrels getting into vehicles) is often limited or excluded depending on the policy and cause. In many cases:

  • Home policies may cover sudden accidental damage, but not long-term “infestation or wear”
  • Auto policies often don’t cover interior damage from rodents unless you have comprehensive coverage and it’s clearly a covered loss
  • Some carriers classify it as “preventable maintenance issue,” not a sudden peril

Bottom line: don’t assume it’s included. Read the section on exclusions and limitations, especially under “vermin,” “rodents,” or “animals.”

A quick 10-minute policy review can save a very expensive surprise later.

Fit Tip of the Week: Strength Is a Gift

Use it. Grow it. Protect it. Your strength is a gift. Not just physical strength, but the strength to keep showing up, keep learning, and keep moving forward when life gets challenging.

“Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge...” — Proverbs 12:1

Discipline isn't punishment—it's training. Growth comes from consistency, not comfort. It comes from choosing effort over excuses and progress over perfection.

Strength isn't always loud. Sometimes it's found in the early mornings, the long days, and the quiet moments when no one is watching, but you keep going anyway.

Every workout, every healthy choice, every act of perseverance matters. The small victories count because they add up over time.

Fitness Challenge: Make it an upper-body day this week. Focus on good form, intentional movement, and gratitude for what your body allows you to do.

Strength training doesn't just build muscle—it also helps maintain bone density, improves balance, and supports healthy aging at every stage of life.

Did You Know?

Summer officially begins with the summer solstice, which is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. It usually falls on June 20 or 21, depending on the year and time zone. The Earth is tilted at its closest angle toward the sun, giving us the most daylight we’ll see all year!

Enjoy the sunshine, Springfield—this is the season to make memories!
