OPPD Director Rick Yoder shared payment figures with Sarpy County Treasurer Rich James on Thursday, March 29.
OPPD makes $32.9 million in payments in-lieu-of-tax
Today, Omaha Public Power District distributed more than $32.9 million in 2017 in-lieu-of-tax payments to 11 southeast Nebraska counties. This compares with nearly $33.1 million distributed the previous year.
OPPD’s payment to Sarpy County totaled $4,857,254, down from $4,937,491 paid last year. In-lieu-of-tax payment amounts are based on 5 percent of OPPD’s gross revenues from the previous year’s retail electricity sales in incorporated cities and towns, and they take the place of property taxes.
County treasurers distribute the funds to school districts, cities and other entities to fund needed services and improvements.
“Sarpy County continues to grow, and I know this payment in-lieu-of-tax will go a long way to help support that growth,” said Director Rick Yoder, who represents Sarpy County on the OPPD Board of Directors, alongside Director Tim Gay.
“I am happy to present these funds on behalf of OPPD,” Yoder said. He delivered a letter of payment to Sarpy County Treasurer Rich James Thursday.
In addition to in-lieu-of-tax payments, the district pays general sales taxes, gasoline taxes, wheel taxes, motor vehicle license fees and permit fees like any other business.

Blood donors urged to help restock Red Cross shelves
after severe winter storms
OMAHA, Neb. (March 19, 2018) — Though spring has officially arrived, the American Red Cross blood supply is still recovering from severe winter storms in March. Donors of all blood types are urged to roll up a sleeve and help save lives.
Winter weather in parts of the country forced more than 270 blood drives to cancel, resulting in over 9,500 uncollected blood and platelet donations in the first two weeks of March. No matter the weather, the need for blood to help cancer patients, those undergoing surgeries, trauma patients and others remains.
Volunteer blood donors from across the country are needed to help ensure lifesaving blood products are available for patients this spring. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

How to donate blood
Simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age in most states (16 with parental consent where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
Blood and platelet donors can save time at their next donation by using RapidPass® to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, before arriving at the blood drive. Lofte Community Theatre Holds Auditions for
The Miracle Worker
Manley, Neb., March 19, 2018 -- The Lofte Community Theatre, located in Manley, NE, just 25 minutes south of Omaha, will hold auditions for William Gibson’s The Miracle Worker April 16 and 17, at 7 pm.
Lofte Community Theatre Executive Artistic Director, says “This piece of theatre is ripe with juicy characters that will really allow local actors to stretch their abilities and bring to life a classic tale.” Set in 1887 in Tuscumbia, Alabama, The Miracle Worker chronicles the true story of Annie Sullivan and her student, Helen Keller.
The play, based on Helen Keller’s autobiography, The Story of My Life first opened on Broadway in 1959 and starred Anne Bancroft as Annie Sullivan and Patty Duke as Helen Keller. The duo went on to reprise their roles for the 1962 film adaptation where they went on to win Academy Awards for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress, respectively.
Struck by illness in infancy, young Helen Keller is left blind, deaf and mute. With no discipline, by the age of six, Helen has grown into a wild, tantrum-throwing child in control of the household. The Kellers hire Annie Sullivan to serve as their daughter’s teacher. After several fierce battles with Helen, Annie convinces the Kellers she needs two weeks alone with Helen in to achieve any progress in the girl's education. During that time, Annie teaches Helen discipline through persistence and consistency and language through hand signals, a double breakthrough that changes Helen's life forever.
Colbert will be casting roles for seven males, and seven females. Additionally, there are roles for several children, who will be cast as blind students. About The Lofte Community Theatre: The Lofte Community Theatre is located in Manley Nebraska, approximately 25 minutes south of Omaha. The theatre, a new post-and-beam style performing arts facility can seat approximately 330 patrons for each performance. Actors and audience members enjoy a beautiful climate-controlled venue year around. The Lofte offers a full concession stand, and also sells beer and wine. The theatre offers six core season productions each year as well as many special events featuring visiting artists including week-long children’s theater workshop, a free Veterans Day concert, and host high-school one-act play competitions in the fall. ENJOY TOBACCO FREE PARKS IN MURRAY
Murray, NE –Village of Murray Board of Trustees approved a resolution that all city-owned recreational areas, parks, and playground areas shall be designated as “tobacco-free” and tobacco use shall be prohibited. The resolution took effect on March 13, 2018. Tobacco Education and Advocacy of the Midlands (T.E.A.M.) congratulates the board for their stance on creating healthy outdoor spaces for their citizens.
Village of Murray is the third Cass County community in the last few months to implement tobacco-free parks policies. Elmwood and Weeping Water passed similar policies in the fall of 2017.
"Young people are tomorrow's future. Smoking shortens those tomorrows.” said Stan Flak,Board of Trustee member.
The primary purpose of the resolution is to protect children from the potential dangers of secondhand smoke while at play in parks. The policy provides adults the opportunity to be non-tobacco using role models to youth on ball fields and playgrounds. Tobacco-free parks benefit the environment and it is through the reduction of cigarette butts litter that the health of local streams, lakes and rivers will continue to improve.
The policy prohibits use of all forms of tobacco products, i.e., cigarettes, cigars, e-cigarettes, pipes, and chew/dip in any park areas or facilities designated as tobacco-free. The resolution will be self-enforced by park users. Although law enforcement may ask the tobacco user to stop using tobacco products or leave the park property, tickets will not be issued. The intent is that residents willingly respect the policy and not use tobacco while enjoying Murray’s fantastic parks and recreation areas. Tobacco-free park areas will be clearly identified with “Tobacco-Free Park” signage.
