DESTINATION IMAGINATION
The Destination Imagination team Assembly Required Springfield Elementary qualified for and is preparing to compete at the Global Finals at the University of Tennessee at the end of May. There will be more than 1000 teams from around the world and the United States competing at this event. It is so exciting to have our district and our school represented among these elite teams! This will be an amazing experience for the five boys on the team and they will no doubt represent our district and Springfield Elementary well.
The majority of the costs for this trip have been paid for by a donor, however the team still has about $1200 of extra expenses associated with this trip that they are trying to raise. The team has arranged to have Pizza Night at Yotes: Yotes has agreed to give the team 10% of their sales the next two Monday evenings (May 7th and May 14th) .
Please consider taking part in these events to help these boys reach their goal.
Destination Imagination is a worldwide creative problem solving team competition in which South Sarpy #46 had nine teams participate in this year. All nine teams (coming from Platteview Central, Springfield Elementary and Westmont Elementary) did well enough at the Regional Tournament to qualify for the State Tournament. At the State tournament two teams placed 3rd overall and one team placed 2nd (placing high enough to advance to the Global level of Competition).
The Springfield American Legion Post 143 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9558 will host a Memorial Day Service on 28 May 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Springfield Cemetery. All are welcome to attend. In case of inclement weather, the service will be held in the Springfield Legion Hall.
50 YEAR CLASS REUNION
Following the Springfield/Platteview Alumni Banquet on 26th of May, the 50 year class of 1962 invites Springfield/Platteview alumnus to join them at the Springfield American Legion Hall. The Hall will be opened at 8:30. Cash bar will be available. Thanks

Sunday April 29th Blood Drive Recap: Once again the Springfield pride has showed up after the last drive I did not know what to expect as numbers of donors but you came through again! Our goal was 40 units and we banked 45. Very pleasing! The Red Cross did make an extra effort to make sure that they had enough staff members on hand Sunday and it paid off I believe the majority of the donors were in and out of the door within 1 hour which was really pleasing to me and them also. And another thing that I notice was that the Red Cross staff were a lot more relaxed which in turn made a calmer feeling when donating. I want to thank all of you who showed up to donate and even the handful who could not and a special thanks to all the businesses in the Springfield area for letting us put up posters, Rick Lee for setting the marquee up and special thanks to the Fire Dept. for the use of the building.

Gale offers voter guidelines for Election Day
LINCOLN – Secretary of State John Gale offered guidelines for Nebraska voters who will go to polling places for the May 15 primary election.
“Going to the polls in Nebraska is easy and convenient,” Gale said. “But there are some simple steps you can take to make sure your voting experience goes smoothly.”
Gale offered the following guidelines for Election Day:
--Check your voter registration and polling place. People can check the status of their voter registration and location of their polling place by contacting their county election office or accessing https://www.votercheck.necvr.
--Change of address. If a registered voter has moved within a county (out of their former precinct) and not updated their registration, the person should go to the polling place associated with their current residence. The person will be required to vote a provisional ballot.
--Be prepared. Before going to the polls, the voter should become informed about the candidates and issues on the ballot. Sample ballots are printed in newspapers and posted on county websites. Mark and take the sample ballot with you to the polling place.
--Conduct at the polls. To maintain proper decorum at the polls, it is requested that people turn off their cell phones.
--Campaigning prohibited. Campaign items such as buttons, stickers and T-shirts are not allowed in a polling place. It is illegal to campaign within 200 feet of a polling site.
--Voter identification. Proper identification will be required at the polling place of people who are newly registered by mail and did not provide identification. These people will be required to provide identification showing their current residence. Identification at the polling place is not required of other voters.
--Nonpartisan voters. If you are registered without a political party affiliation, you will receive the nonpartisan ballot. In addition, nonpartisan voters may request a Republican Party or Democratic Party ballot for U.S. Senate and House races, or they may request a full Libertarian Party ballot.
Polls are open on Election Day from 8 a.m. CDT (7 a.m. MDT) to 8 p.m. CDT (7 p.m. MDT).

STATE LEGISLATOR NEWS

May 4, 2012, Lincoln— The Nebraska Legislature maintains memberships in several national legislative organizations. The National Council of State Legislatures (NCSL) is a good example of a bipartisan organization that serves the legislators and staff of the country's 50 states and its territories. NCSL provides research, technical assistance and opportunities for policymakers to exchange ideas on the most pressing state issues. The organization is also an effective and respected advocate for the interests for state government before Congress and federal agencies. The leadership of NCSL is composed of legislators and staff from across the country. At the beginning of every 90-day session of the Nebraska Legislature, senators and staff are appointed by the speaker to serve on committees and task forces of NCSL and other national legislative organizations.
The Council of State Governments (CSG) is another national organization that focuses on major policy issues. Members of the Nebraska Legislature also serve CSG in its leadership positions and participate in the professional development opportunities it offers. CSG was founded during the Great Depression, and for more than 75 years, CSG has provided state leaders with support and recommendations on promising approaches to creating good public policy. CSG is a strictly nonpartisan organization that brings state leaders together to share ideas and provides them with the chance to learn valuable lessons from each other.
Because of my hard work and membership on the legislature’s Health and Human Services Committee, Speaker of the Legislature Mike Flood invited me to participate this month in a seminar in Denver, Colorado. The three-day program is titled, “Identifying State Health Priorities to Ensure Healthy Families: Using Limited Dollars Wisely.” Four other senators who serve on legislative committees such as Appropriations, Business and Labor, Education, Government, Health and Human Services, Judiciary, and the Nebraska Retirement Systems will be part of Nebraska's delegation at the seminar. Nebraska senators and staff will collaborate with legislative representatives from Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, New Mexico, Oregon, Texas and Wyoming.
The National Council of State Legislatures is co-sponsoring the seminar with the National Governors Association, the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials, the Association of Maternal and Child Health Programs, and the National Association of County and City Health Officials. The seminar is funded through a grant from the U. S. Department of Health and Human Services, so this valuable training opportunity is a no-cost event for our state.
The seminar's format includes five sessions for all participants, and four team discussion meetings, in which every state's team members will develop state action plans to meet identified goals and objectives. Senators and legislative staff will focus on promoting healthy families, raising awareness of state health goals and resources, allocating limited health dollars efficiently and effectively, facilitating constructive communication among the state's key players, and identifying the next steps to be taken in each participating state.
The National Council of State Legislatures and the Council of State Governments are two of seven national legislative organizations to which the Nebraska Legislature belongs. These organizations, like those that provide education and support for public officials at all levels of government, offer legislators opportunities to receive timely information on a broad spectrum of issues, as well as intense, leadership development training in multiple-day workshops. The seminar I will attend this month will be brief and focus only on state health priorities. I am honored that Speaker Flood invited me to participate. I assured the speaker, and I assure you too, that I will work hard to represent Nebraska well and safeguard the trust that has been placed in me.
